1. an upright bar, post, or pillar used as a support, as for a window, a roof, or the deck of a ship.
2. a framework of two vertical bars which fasten loosely around the neck of a cow to hold her in place while in a stall.
–v.t.
1. to fasten (cattle) by stanchions.
2. to strengthen or support with stanchions.
